September Issue – Back-to-School, Cozy Sweaters and Tiburon Mile!

Our September issue has hit the streets, chock full of back-to-school, fashion and local happenings as well as a thought-provoking feature on the national healthcare movement deemed Slow Medicine.

Here’s the breakdown.

It's time to head back to school! Lunches a worry? Lynda Balslev, a food writer has put together a few easy-to-make, healthy, locally sourced and kid-tested box lunches. Her awesome photos make them look extra appetizing. Need a tutor or thinking you might have some skills to volunteer as a tutor? Read Calin Van Paris’ Lending a Hand, profiling the Marin County School Volunteers program, which had been helping kids make the grade since 1997. What to wear? Well, for those with tweens, Simon Ungless, director of fashion of the Academy of Art University, says “Those skirts are too short!” (he is talking about the tweens) Ungless a former collaborator with Alexander McQueen offers more helpful fashion hints in this month’s Q&A. And to round out the schooling portion of this issue, our fourth annual Private School Guide, featuring 150 Bay Area school listings.

Here’s a new term for you, Arm Party. Yep it’s an official thing. It’s what you call an arrangement of various mix-matched bracelets one might wear. Veronica Sooley has curated her favorite bangles and baubles to invite to your next arm party.

Speaking of fashion — our 14-page fashion spread, Into the Woods, was also curated by Veronica, and serves up a collection of the most luscious long sweaters and other ‘cozy’ pieces, photographed at the fabulous Ralston White Retreat, the nearly 100 year old, Willis Polk-designed estate in Mill Valley.

Registered for the Tiburon Mile?  Richard Wheeler explores the history of this race in The Big Swim.

Looking to dip into warmer waters? Say, in Hawaii? Read about four Marinites favorite activities, along with corresponding recreational hotel packages that include activities like, paddling boarding, outrigger, golf and even hikes in Molokai.

And for more adventurous journey, follow Marin couple Anna and Joseph Schell on their honeymoon across Argentina.

Finally, Blair Campbell examines Slow Medicine, a healthcare movement spurred on by Marin author Katy Butler’s article in The New York Times last year, “What Broke My Father’s Heart: Putting in a Pacemaker Wrecked My Family’s Life,” which was so widely read, she was offered a book deal on the topic. Her book, Knocking on Heaven’s Door: The Path to a Better Way of Death, published this month.

So there you have it. Enjoy, and as always thanks for reading!
