About the party:
The Schurig Center for Brain Injury Recovery, founded by Karen Schurig of Mill Valley in 1985, is the only non-profit offering brain injury specific services in the community. The mission of the organization is to improve the quality of life for brain injury survivors and their families and to help raise awareness of the causes and effects of these disabilities.
This year’s BAM Gala saw 200 people in attendance and raised almost$190,000. Proceeds from the BAM Gala contribute to the Karen G. Schurig Scholarship Fund, providing assistance for low-income brain injury survivors and their families to thrive and reach their highest potential through access to affordable educational, supportive and rehabilitative services.
There were several highlights of this inspiring and enjoyable evening. Emcee Joan Ryan, award winning journalist, author and SF Giants media consultant, shared her experience and spoke to the importance of being part of a team, a community, that offers kindness and support of one another. A short inspiring video about two families impacted by brain injury, created by filmmaker Andrew Hida, titled New Normal, was featured at the event. And Dr. Diane Barnes, Kaiser Radiologist and stroke survivor, was honored with the Creating Connections Award for her inspiring work and support of others whose lives have been touched by injury. The next Gala will be held in March or April of 2020
