Marinship Walking Tour

Marinship Corporation was a shipbuilding company of the United States during World War II, created to build the shipping required for the war effort. Founded in 1942, the shipyard built 93 cargo ships and oil tankers, before ending operations 1945. This weekend, take a walk back in time on this guided tour of Sausalito’s historic Marinship. The Bay Model and surrounding area was a major WWII shipyard, which had a significant role in winning the war and influencing social changes in Marin County. After the end of World War II the shipyards were decommissioned almost as rapidly as they had been built, taking with them almost all of the jobs that so many had moved to the Bay Area to take during the war. The area subsequently became home to an enlarged Sausalito houseboat community. Come and learn more about the history, the extraordinary Marinship workers, and the spirit of this era. Dress in layers, wear comfortable walking shoes, bring water, hat, and sunscreen. Rain cancels.
